This innovative programme is aimed at providing a comprehensive preparation for a teaching career. It is one of the only such programmes currently taught through English in Continental Europe. An important component of the programme is its ETEPS (European Teacher Education for Primary Schools) strand.
ETEPS is a joint programme established between Stenden University (Netherlands), Linneaus University (Sweden), Buskerud University College (Norway) and University College Sealand . The programme is focused at facilitating the performance of the teaching profession at international schools in Europe and the rest of the world. In the course of this element of this phase you will come to work with subjects dealing with globalisation, intercultural competence, the understanding of interaction between humans, and the respect for other cultures. At least one training period will take place at an international school, and at least one training period will take place abroad.
This programme aims to furnish you with the following competencies: Intercultural Relations; Interpersonal Relations; Pedagogy; Subject knowledge and Didactics; Organization; Collaboration; Communication; Reflection and Development. Your main compulsory teaching subject is Teaching English as a Second Language but the rest of your teaching subjects are elective.
Elective teaching subjects are offered in Years 2, 3 and 4 and include: Physical Education and Health; Intercultural Understanding and Religion; natural Science, Life Science and Technology; Mathematics; Special Education; Art and Culture; History and Social Geography; International and Global Perspectives.
The programme also consists of a number of compulsory educational subjects including Teaching Experience and a Bachelor Thesis.
The university does not currently offers a related Masters programme, taught through English.
General Certificate of Education (with examination in 8 subjects where at least 3 are A-levels, alternatively 2 A-levels + 2 AS-levels. Subjects to include Maths.
Leaving Certificate, showing at least 6 subjects of which at least 2 Higher Level subjects (at least Grade H5. Pass Maths will be considered for Maths requirement.
FETAC/QQI Level 5 Certificates will be considered for admission only to same study field as they would gain entry for in Ireland
