The core competences in nursing and health care cover both knowledge and practical skills such as observation skills. These competences include the ability to analyse and interpret the gained information for sound decision-making, embracing basic nursing as well as different specialised areas. .

The professional competence of Nurses is based on knowledge which embraces both nursing science and other disciplines.Bachelors of Health Care, or registered nurses, assist, guide, support and rehabilitate people in different age groups. They help people to cope, and to adapt to illnesses, disabilities, and death. As experts in the nursing field, they implement and develop a nursing process that promotes and maintains health, prevents illnesses and improves the healing process. 

This degree programme enables the graduate nurse to act flexibly in the changing work environments of primary health care and specialised nursing sectors, as well as in private organisations.

Programme content


Key contents of the degree programme are studies in:

Basic Nursing; Public Health; Women's Health; Mental Health; Paediatric nursing; Perioperative Nursing; Gerontological Nursing; Medical-Surgical Nursing.

On-the-job learning, i.e. clinical training is an essential part of the programme. On-the-job learning takes place in different types of health care settings. Hospitals and other clinical training places are required to provide supervision at higher education level during the clinical training. The practice can be completed nationally and/or internationally in different caring and nursing settings.

Part of the studies may also be done on an international student exchange.

Students will need to have acquired Finnish/Swedish language by second year, to communicate with patients
