Programme profile


This programme is run at the Dutch School of Sports and Nutrition, which has nearly 2000 students. The School hosts three educational programmes: Physical Education, Nutrition & Dietetics and Sports, Management and Business. Currently, the latter is the only programme that can be studied through English.

At the heart of the school is the Resource and Training Centre for Health and Fitness (ESG), founded in 1997 as a means to develop and update the curriculum of physical education through research, case studies and feedback from the field. ESG offers over 25 post graduate courses.

During your programme, entrepreneurial skills and spirit will provide a solid foundation as you learn to research, plan, organise, lead, manage and evaluate the business of sport. In the first two years, you’ll also participate in a variety of sports to further develop your management and interpersonal skills. In addition to classroom instruction, three practical internships give you a head start on your future career.

Students will specialise in one of the following areas: Sports Development; High Performance Sport or Sport Commerce

Programme content


Year 1 & 2: The first year starts with an introduction to sport management and general topics that will prepare you for the rest of your study. You’ll also get to opportunity to participate in two international field trips.In the second half of the year you’ll focus intensively on event management. Throughout the year, you’ll also practice a range of sports to learn specific management skills and expand your knowledge of a wide range of sports.

Year 2: this year is focused on analysis and development, including project management. Modules include: Sport & Society, Sport Policy, Sport Law, Sport Economics, Sport Marketing and Sport & Media. You will continue to a practice a reduced selection of sports and you do a 10-week internship in a country other than your own. (Students have recently done internships in South Africa, Dubai and Switzerland)


Year 3: in this year, you are taught how to become an entrepreneur and how to set up your own sports-related business. In addition you will learn from modules in subjects such as Finance, Economics, Marketing and Accounting. You also deepen your knowledge and understanding of Sports Policy, Sprrts Law and Sport & the Media. In addition you complete a further 15-week internship in a sports organisation , anywhere in the world. For the first half of the year you will complete a minor in either Sport Development or High Performance Sport.

Year 4: In the first half of your final year, you’ll complete a full-time internship abroad. In the second half of the year, you’ll conclude your study with a graduation project.
