Karelia University of Applied Sciences [known as North Karelia UAS, until 2013] was founded in 1992, one of the first Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland. It operates in Joensuu at five centres on four different campuses, where it has approximately 4 000 students on its 18 degree programmes. Its five teaching centres are: Centre for Natural Resources; Centre for Business and Engineering; Centre for Creative Industries; Centre for Design and International Business; Centre for Social Services and Health Care.

Karelia University of Applied Sciences and Savonia University of Applied Sciences operate in a strong strategic partnership.

A Student Housing Company manages accommodation for international students. It is important that the incoming students apply for accommodation as early as possible since the number of rooms available is limited.
