Programme profile


This programme is based on studies of natural sciences, biology, medicine and basic principles of primary eye care service.

This programme is the first step in professional optometrist education scheme in Latvia. It offers extensive studies of natural sciences including organic chemistry, biology, calculus, physics for natural sciences, optics, basics of human anatomy, general physiology, ophthalmic optics, microbiology, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology of the eye, physiology of vision, optometry instruments, refractive defects, binocular vision and other subjects.

Note: this programme has both a September and February start

First Year
Mathematics for optometry; Chemistry for optometrists; Physics for optometrists; Introduction to optometry studies; Psychology of communication; Optics I; Biology; Data collecting and processing in sciences; Biochemistry; Optical materials

Second Year
Optics II; General physiology; Ophthalmic optics;  Anatomy and physiology of the eye; Optometric dispensing; Physiology of vision ; Anomalies of refraction; Microbiology’ Visual psychophysics; Colorimetry and photometry; Introduction to optometric instruments

Third Year
Applied statistical methods; Neurophysiology; General pathology; Pharmacology of the eye; Introduction to eye diseases; Anomalies of refraction II; Research methods in vision science; Optometric instrumentation II; Practice; Binocular vision;  Thesis; Contact lenses

Progression


Graduates can progress to a MSc in Clinical Optometry

Entry Requirements


3 A-Levels ( Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and 3 GCSEs. A/S or A2 Maths preferred

Six passes at Leaving Certificate, inc Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at H5, or above.
