Programme profile


In this programme, you'll learn everything about imaging in radio diagnostics, radiotherapy, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine. You’ll work with patients and learn how to prepare for an examination and take and archive photos, scans and X-rays. The programme also covers how to use equipment, how to communicate medical and technical findings, and how to plan treatments.

Due to the technical nature of the course, it’s important that you’re sufficiently proficient in mathematics and physics.

In this programme, you will use medical equipment to prepare, execute and process visual imaging research and treatment. You will be trained to be the professional link between technology, safety and patient care. During the training you will learn how the human body functions, which examination you can perform when presented with a clinical case, which equipment you should use for diagnoses or treatment, and how these devices work. We will teach you the effects of radiation and radioactivity on the human body and how you can protect yourself and your patient against these effects.

Programme content


First year
An orientation on the complete programme, with a focus on the responsibilities and tasks you will be performing as a Medical Imaging & Radiotherapy professional (MBRT graduate).

Education is divided between: Theory 40% + Self-study 20% + Practical training 40%

Second year
You will dig deeper into more complex diagnostic modalities, advanced medical imaging devices such as CT, MRI, SPECT. Also you will learn how to make complex schedules and plans for radiation treatment. Halfway through this year, you will decide on a profile theme, to personalize your third en fourth year of the programme. At the end of the second year you will also select a specific type of examination and treatment within the domain of a Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy professional.

Year Three
You will start year three exploring the profile theme you chose in the second year. Half of this year is focused around a 20 weeks internship* within one of the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy workplaces. The other half of year 3 you will be attending a Minor. You can choose a minor which is linked to your profile theme; at Fontys you have an opportunity to enrol in a profiling Minor, focusing on one specific healthcare theme, thus shaping the programme to complement your personal preference. You can also enrol in a Minor at another University of Applied Sciences outside Fontys, at a University of Applied Sciences abroad or choose a Minor within a different Fontys programme.

Fourth year
Graduation year, completing another 20 week internship* within one of the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy arenas. You will conduct an individual graduation Research project, aligned with your profile theme as chosen in year two.

Internships

The hospital internships are done in the first year and are a fixed part of the programme. In year 1 and 2, you will engage in short orientation internships. Year 3 includes the Minor with a 5-month internship. In year 4, you’ll combine your graduation internship with your graduation research project.

* Examples of internship workplaces are Radiology, Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound departments. Fontys has a special department which is focused on building contacts between students and relevant organisations.

Progression


This programme will prepare you for the profession of medical imaging and radiotherapy expert (diagnostic and therapeutic radiographer). Due to variation in the legislation and regulations of different countries concerning operating medical devices that deliver (ionising) radiation, additional work experience or other proof of skill could be required in your country of origin.

Your specialisations/internships should be directed at your chosen career specialisation, be it in Radiotherapy or Radiology.
