Programme profile

The 21st century is taking shape as the century of biology and medicine, in which the great challenge has been to transform life sciences, up until now highly descriptive, into quantitative and exact sciences. This challenge has led to the creation of a new branch of engineering called Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering.

Biomedical Engineering is a relatively new interdisciplinary degree program in which traditional techniques of mechanical, aeronautical, chemical, electronic, IT, telecommunications and materials engineering are applied to analysis and problem solving related to biology and medicine. Due to its interdisciplinary character, Biomedical Engineering requires training not only in applied sciences (applied mathematics, physics, and chemistry) and in engineering techniques, but also in physiology and other biological sciences.

This programme has been created to prepare students to embark on a career in the medical instrumentation industry, providing them with basic training that will enable them to work in several areas, including developing new technologies in medical instrumentation (pharmaceutical and gene supply systems, biomedical imaging technology, implantable medical devices, surgical instrumentation and techniques, BioMEMS, biosensors, etc.), medical imaging, biomaterial technology, cell tissue engineering, rehabilitation biomechanics and engineering, as well as numerical simulation and mathematical analysis of biological and medical systems. The programme provides a general education in all these subjects and also permits students to specialise in three disciplines: Medical instrumentation; Medical imaging; Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
