Programme profile

This programme develops your knowledge in one of the most intriguing aspects of human knowledge and behaviour: language and communication. Studying linguistics means learning about the fundamentals of human language, from its many sounds and sentence structures to the ways in which language influences how we think about the world.

Programme content

The first year of the programme focuses on the different approaches used within language and human communication, and the connections between them. In modules such as Phonology, Historical Linguistics and Socio-linguistics, you will learn about the various research methods used in linguistics.

During your second year. you will take module related to your chosen area of specialisation. Three specialisations are available to you:
- Descriptive Linguistics
- Language and Cognition
- Comparative Indo-European Linguistics

In the first semester of your third year, you can choose between following an internship, studying a minor, spending a semester abroad or creating and following a personalised ‘study package’ comprising electives from another programme. This is an opportunity for you to further tailor your degree to suit your goals. The final semester of the programme is dedicated to writing your academic thesis. You can choose the subject of your thesis together with your supervisor
