Philosophy has been studied at Leuven since the foundation of the university in 1425.This programme is run at the university's Institute of Philosophy which offers a full range of programmes, taught through English, leading to BA, MA, MPhil and PhD degrees. Just under 700 students study Philosophy at the university of whom some 200 are international students, comprised of over 40 different nationalities.
The Institute aims at being a centre for advanced philosophical learning and research. The teaching of philosophy is based on the faculty's personal scholarly research combined with a programme that emphasises the study of the history of philosophy.
On this programme, students major in Philosophy (120 credits( and minor (60 credits) in ome out of the following three minors:
- Liberal Arts
- Theology and Religious Studies
- Educational Studies
Programme content
The aim of the programme is that students obtain systematic and historical insight into the posing of questions, the formulation of answers, and their evolution within the foremost domains of philosophy. They learn the history of philosophy, and they teach themselves to handle the domain's research instruments for written and verbal expression.
Mandatory modules include: Logic; Introduction to Ethics; Theory of Knowledge; Philosophical Anthropology; Political Philosophy and the Ethics of Globalisation; Philosophy of Science; Philosophy of Being ; History of Philosophy; Contemporary Anglo-American Philosophy; Contemporary Continental Philosophy
Electives include opportunities to study world religions as well as Chinese, Russian, Arabic or Jewish Philosophy
