Programme profile


This programme takes place at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute [AMFI] The programme forms an excellent basis for a successful career in the fashion industry and all related businesses. Students specialise in either Fashion & Design, Fashion & Branding or Fashion & Management.

Today virtually every economic activity is influenced by fashion and trends. For this reason, training at the AMFI will familiarise you with all aspects of contemporary culture. You will be at once a specialist and an all-rounder. Technology, design, media, sport, (pop) music, politics, visual arts, economics, purchasing, production, delivery, marketing, styling and architecture: all these subjects will be dealt with in your studies.

In the Fashion & Design specialisation, you learn about form, colour, materials and technique and also about the social, business and cultural background to fashion. You develop a personal vision of fashion that you work up into clothing and styling concepts. The professional products that you develop include garments and complete outfits, illustrations , concept presentations and photo shoots.

In Fashion & Management you learn about the clothing a fashion industry in detail and how to use these insights in the areas of buying, producing and selling clothes. Important management areas include Logistics, ICT, Marketing, Retail, HR and Economics.You produce a Fabric Portfolio, a Quality Manual, a Production Guide and a Collection & Buying Plan.

In Fashion & Branding, you learn how to develop a concept that forms the foundation of a brand and how to manage the design principles underlying this and to set up and visualise a brand strategy. You will produce retail concepts, house styles, magazine formats, web concepts, events, brand manuals and forecasting & trends books. To achieve these results, you will need to learn about marketing, 3D design, copywriting skills and graphic design.

You will also have the opportunity to follow a semester in a Fashion School in a university in another country

Programme content


Year 1 [Foundation]: In the first semester, you learn how to develop a personal vision of fashion. In workshops, you develop a Style Book, an Inspiration Book and a Prototype. In the second semester, you focus mainly on your specialisation.

In Fashion & Design, you learn how to design an article of clothing, from an historical perspective and you learn how to make designs using different fabrics.

In Fashion & Management, you analyse a brand, look at developments in the industry, formulate design specifications and design an article of clothing, including technical production specifications.

In Fashion & Branding, you are introduced to key activities such as a basic analysis of an article of clothing, concept formulation, trend spotting, exhibitions and designing a brand manual

Year 2:
Fashion & Design: in the first semester, the focus is on technology & experiment. You design a mini-collection, organise a show, compile a technique book and a research book. In the second semester, the accent is on textiles, illustration and innovation. You learn how to develop a personal "signature" style and develop a collection book

Fashion & Management: in the first semester, you choose a concept and develop it into a new design and prepare a business plan for an appropriate retail environment. The second semester has an international, economic and strategic focus. You look at the business opportunities represented by current trends and the purchasing, production, logistics, marketing and sales elements of a strategic process.


Fashion & Branding: in the first semester, you learn how to create a commercial fashion environment in which brand and consumer can meet. You also learn how to communicate a brand in print and digitally

Years 3 & 4:
Fashion & Design: You choose an internship, a further specialisation and a minor. Your choices are related to your career objectives: Independent Designer; In-company Designer; Fashion Forecaster. The final semester is devoted either to your catwalk collection or a thesis on your trend forecasts.


Fashion & Management: You choose an internship, a further specialisation and a minor. Your choices are related to your career objectives: Buyer/Product Manager; Retail Manager; Production Coordinator. The final semester is devoted either to an assignment for a company or brand, or a relevant research project.

Fashion & Branding: You choose an internship, a further specialisation and a minor. Your choices are related to your career objectives: Brand Engineer; Concept Developer; Creative Manager. The final semester is devoted either to an assignment for a company or brand, or a relevant research project.

Progression


The college does not currently offer any related Masters programmes, taught through English but has established links with relevant fashion Masters in some of the leading European fashion schools.

2 A-levels + 4 GCSEs or 3 A-levels + 3 GCSEs.Good passes at Maths and Economics/Business preferred

Relevant BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma considered
