Wroclaw Medical University was founded in 1945, as the Faculty of Medicine of University of Wroclaw. As in many Polish universities, the faculty became an independent university. Wroclaw Medical University now has five faculties: Medicine; Dentistry; Health Science; Pharmacy; Postgraduate Training.

In 2003, the English Division was established in the Faculty of Medicine. The Division is a unit for teaching foreign students in the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry. The curriculum of study is identical with that taught to Polish students. Students of English Division are mainly Swedish, norwegian, German, US and Canadian citizens. There are currently over 300 students in the English Division.

Recently, the university has constructed a new Clinical Centre for the location of the University Hospital health centres and clinics ,, laboratory diagnostics centre and a state-of-the-art operating suite .The university achieved ISO 9001 certification in 2002, the first medical university in Poland to do so.
