Programme profile
The International Medical School at the University of Milan offers a Medicine and Surgery degree programme that combines academic training and hospital experience as well as laboratory research. The first two years are dedicated to the study of the structure and functions of the body, the biological and biochemical bases of life and the mechanisms of illness. Years 3 and 4 involve a systematic study of the diseases of the human organs and systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, etc). The final two years of the course are dedicated to the consolidation of the clinical skills of patient management and the drafting of the final thesis.
The distinctive features of the programme include its innovative teaching methods: problem-based learning through structured training problems, small study groups, and discussions of medical cases. As a consequence, there is a reduced focus on traditional lectures. Students are given a significant exposure to real clinical activities, from the 3rd year onwards.
he course is also characterized by some aspects of educational innovation, related to the use of advanced training tools, such as PBL - problem based learning -, interactive sessions in small groups, strong interdisciplinary approach, and a broad clinical activity.
